Bring on day seven! Today I’m bringing you a peek at organic cotton crib mobiles for the nursery by Handmade By Marika!

The shop owner, Marika, crochets each of these lovely designs herself using organic cotton yarn and I am seriously in love with the colorful whimsy of her designs! In addition to the crib mobiles, her shop also offers rattles, plushies, crochet patterns, alternative filling options, and custom orders!

How seriously cute are these little guys?…

An interview with Marika, owner of Handmade By Marika
(Tartu, Estonia)

Handmade By Marika – how did you come up with this brand name and what does it symbolize?

My Etsy user name is ByMarika and my brand name is Handmade By Marika. When I started my Etsy shop, I did not know that I’d end up making toy rattles. At first I made and sold all kinds of crocheted items hoping to see what will be my and buyers’ favorite. That is why I decided to name the shop after myself rather than a name that describes what I make.

► Think back to when you first began dreaming up Handmade By Marika; what one piece of advice would you send back in a time capsule to yourself?

I would just send my greetings! I have never had any serious doubts or regrets regarding my little business. I have always just had fun with it and enjoyed every moment.

► What keeps you inspired? Do you have any techniques for getting out of a rut?

My clients keep me inspired! There is nothing better than a happy customer. I love custom orders and getting warm and positive feedback after hard work – this makes it all worthwhile. My family is also my big inspiration and support. I have a wonderful husband and two sons who help me how ever they can. They offer new design ideas, help me choose colors and so on. My husband even sometimes takes my packages to the post office.

► Name a most used or favorite tool for creating your product:

My most used tool is my very simple gray PRYM aluminum 3.5mm crochet hook. I use it practically every day and start missing it if I have not held it for a couple of days.

► What activities keep you busy in your free time?

My home and family keeps me busy. You know, regular things like cleaning, shopping, taking kids to their soccer practices, helping with home works and so on. But if we talk about what I LOVE to do, then I must say, that I love good food and I use every opportunity I get to eat out and discover new and interesting restaurants. Another option is to make something delicious myself or with my husband and enjoy it at home. To balance this food love of mine, I sometimes go running and I use my bicycle for everyday errands. Oh, and I enjoy playing boardgames with my friends or with my children.

► List three adjectives that describe the style of your shop:

colorful – simple – cute

► What eco-initiatives have you established within your business?

From the very beginning of making toys I have used only organic cotton yarn, because many cotton producers use large amount of pesticides and insecticides which poison the environment, farmers and us – the users. Children have very delicate skin and they love to put toys in their mouth. I want to offer toys that are good for them and for the environment as well.

► What’s next for Handmade By Marika?

Next for me is a pop up shop named Little Christmas Market in Helsinki on December 16-21. The pop up Christmas shop is a temporary shop cooperative between Team Estonia and Finland Handcrafters Team – these are fellow artists and vintage sellers from Etsy. There will be products from 25 Estonian and Finnish Etsy sellers. I have been to craft fairs before, but this is my first pop up shop, so I am very excited! At the moment I am making my last items for this event and it has been like a little factory around my house lately! (click HERE to visit the event’s facebook page!)

► What TV show do you never miss a beat on?

I love cooking competitions. Australian show My Kitchen Rules is very fun but my new favorite is MasterChef Junior. These kids there are just amazing.
