Etsy 12 Organic Days of Christmas for Mama & Baby | Delano Designs

On the fourth day of Christmas I want to introduce you to… organic cotton crib bed sets from Delano Designs!

With a background in interior design, owner Alison has some great pattern and color combinations and is even adding bundled nursery design packages in the coming months!

She even does custom orders. You want organic nursery crib sheets with bears wearing top-hats? No problemo…

An interview with Alison, owner of Delano Designs
(Eugene, Oregon, USA)

► Delano Designs – how did you come up with this brand name and what does it symbolize?

Delano is my great grandmother’s maiden name and my grandfather’s middle name. They were both artistic and painted. When I was trying to come up with a name for my company, my daughter suggested this. I love how it sounds and feel like I am honoring and following my family history!

► Think back to when you first began dreaming up Delano Designs; what one piece of advice would you send back in a time capsule to yourself?

It is OK to buy things you need to make your work easier and more efficient!

► What keeps you inspired? Do you have any techniques for getting out of a rut?

My family keeps me inspired! We are in grandchildren mode, we have three and two on the way and family members keep suggesting new items for me to make. In addition, the fabric companies I buy from keep making the most beautiful fabrics!

► Name a most used or favorite tool for creating your product:

Trying to name a favorite tool for me is liking someone asking who my favorite child is (well almost). I love all the tools I’ve gathered that make my life so much easier and I did not start with all of them: my rotary cutter, my large perfect height for me cutting table, my cutting mat (I found a non-smelly, non PVC one, what a challenge), my specially made plexiglass templates and of course my workhorse Viking sewing machine (Emerald 116) and serger (200S)!

► What activities keep you busy in your free time?

Free time, I don’t know what that is! I used to sew in my free time, and I still do. I also love to read and spend time with family and friends.

► List three adjectives that describe the style of your shop:

I have a variety of styles and fabrics, they range from vintage to modern and everything in between. They also change frequently and customers can customize their items.

I guess I’d have to say: variety – custom – modern

► What eco-initiatives have you established within your business?

I started making baby bedding when my daughter-in-law was pregnant with my first grandchild. I was not finding organic baby bedding in fabrics I liked. So I thought, I need to just make it!!! My daughter searched and found the amazing companies I use and I now buy only GOTS certified 100% organic fabric (GOTS certification goes beyond growing the cotton organically, to specifying the types of dyes that can be used and not allowing the use of formaldehyde in the processing of the fabric, etc.).

I also use bamboo and organic cotton quilt batting, organic cotton or eco-wool or recycled pop bottle fiber for stuffing and use all cotton and organic cotton thread. I also use cellophane bags for packaging and ship in mailers made from paper that is certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.

This all is incredibly important to me. I myself am chemically sensitive and get very ill from chemicals and little babies have immature immune systems and cannot process toxic chemicals well. Unfortunately a nursery can often be one of the most toxic rooms in the house, new paint, carpeting, furniture, and bedding emit many chemicals into the air. With babies spending so much time sleeping I think it’s vitally important that they have as healthy an environment as possible; this is one reason I do what I do!

► What’s next for Delano Designs?

I am going to be adding swaddlers with flannel on the inside and fun fabrics on the outside. In addition, I am going to be working on my website to sell more directly to customers, and will be selling on a few new sites as well – of course you’ll still be able to find me on etsy.

In addition to making baby bedding I am an interior designer and will be adding a new service to my etsy shop, combining my two passions! I will be adding e-design packages for nurseries. They will include eco-friendly items (e.g. cribs, mattresses, paint colors, artwork etc.) for a complete nursery design! I will be developing them for my bedding collections so someone can buy bedding and have a whole room design to match! This will be coming in the next month or two!

► What TV show do you never miss a beat on?

I LOVE American Idol! The present version with Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban and well, OK, Jennifer Lopez. I’ve actually come to like her more as a judge. I love music and I love to see the different interpretations of songs by the contestants. I absolutely love their creativity and watching them come into their own!
