Etsy 12 Organic Days of Christmas for Mama & Bebe | URB Apothecary

On the third day of Christmas I bring to you… belly butter from Urb Apothecary for a growing mama tummy!

Urb Apothecary truly embodies what it is to live pure and treat your body well. Owner Leyna formed this small-batch business out of her own personal interest in natural living, a whole foods diet, and herbal remedies. Her passion for all things handmade combined with her Bachelor’s Degree in Foods and Nutrition allow you to rest easy that she has her recipes down to a science.

You have to visit the Urb Apothecary shop to truly appreciate the collection of natural goodness Leyna has to offer (from cheek and lip balms to men’s aftershave and beard tonic!), but the items that really catch my eye are her goodies for baby and mama – Belly Butter for mama’s growing baby tummy and Oh Baby Balm for a sore baby’s bum.

An interview with Leyna, owner of Urb Apothecary
(Santa Cruz, California, USA)

► Urb Apothecary – how did you come up with this brand name and what does it symbolize?

Choosing and finding a brand name that is easy to remember, original, and embodies the product is most likely one of the hardest parts of starting a business. Even if you finally come up with a name the odds of it being used already are stacked against you. Honestly, I am very surprised that URB APOTHECARY wasn’t taken. It’s simply a phonetic play on “herb.”

► What two products are must-haves for new or soon-to-be mamas?

The Belly Butter was formulated with a growing pregnancy belly in mind. Stretch marks are a large concern for many women, so I researched oils and butters that helps keep skin elasticity and therefore possibly reducing the risks of stretch marks. It also helps ease the itchiness of skin being stretched.

Oh Baby Balm contains herbs and oils that are strong anti-bacterial and anti-virals but are safe for baby and sensitive skin. Organic coconut oil is infused with lavender flowers, chamomile, hops, and calendula, making a perfect diaper rash salve free of chemicals and preservatives. It smells amazing and has calming aromas to help ease an upset baby.

► Think back to when you first began dreaming up Urb Apothecary; what one piece of advice would you send back in a time capsule to yourself?

Don’t be so terrified, this is the wild adventure you are always seeking. The people you will meet along the way will aid, inspire, and encourage you!

► What keeps you inspired? Do you have any techniques for getting out of a rut?

Instagram and Pinterest are huge sources of inspiration. Walking through well curated shops and just simply taking in pieces of art and handmade products.

► Name a most used or favorite tool for creating your product:

My 4 cups Pyrex glass measuring cup. I melt everything in it!

► What activities keep you busy in your free time?

I don’t have to much free time, but I love to hike Pogonip Creek Trail and sample the coffee around town.

► List three adjectives that describe the style of your shop:

conscious – edgy – metallic

► What eco-initiatives have you established within your business?

I use 95-98% organic ingredients. It’s incredibly important to me that they are organic and consciously harvested and grown. In my packaging I make sure that everything is recyclable or reusable and strive to produce very little waste.

► What’s next for Urb Apothecary?

This next year I am going to focus on more events, collaborations with other makers, and connecting to other businesses and creators in my city’s community. Overall, working on tightening the business aspect up and making production more stream line (as stream line as small batch can get).

► What’s your favorite color combination right now?

army green + gold
